Google’s SGE Will Change Everything!

How A.I. Will Affect Your Website Traffic – (2 min read)

The world of SEO is constantly evolving, and Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is poised to be a game-changer. SGE leverages AI to understand user intent and potentially alter how search results appear for your small business. While the specifics of SGE are still under development, here’s what we know so far and how you can prepare your website:

What is Google’s SGE?

Think of SGE as a smarter search engine. Instead of just displaying links, Google might use AI to directly answer user queries with concise summaries or informative snippets pulled from various sources. This could potentially reduce the number of clicks users make on individual websites, impacting organic traffic.

For example, you can see in the following example that a new “AI Overview” section is giving the answer, instead of a website.

Now if you click on the “Show More” button, then you will get some suggested resources. These links will likely be more important than the top results because many people will simply trust the A.I. answer.  Here is what is shown after clicking to see the full AI Overview:

There are many other examples. Some with pictures, graphics, quotes, product recommendations, and a section where user’s can ask a follow up question. Here is another example:

While some may fear that A.I. will be the end of SEO, it’s more likely that SEO will adapt. The A.I. has to pull information from somewhere and the user experience would not be great if Google doesn’t connect people to a business that can help them. Which is why, many of the A.I. overviews will pull Google Reviews into their suggestions.

LinkedIn links, Reddit links, Quora answers, and other high-authority sites are being used to feed the A.I.  So having good content on many different online platforms is important. Being number 1 in the search engine is now even more important because less people will click the links that are not in the top.

Long tail keywords and content that answers popular questions is also going to be more important. The A.I. doesn’t have experience in your local area, doing “what you do”. It can only predict text and find meaning in content. Therefore, you must have good, unique, content on your website.

What About A.I. Advertising?

The impact of Google’s SGE on AI ads is a double-edged sword, with both potential benefits and drawbacks:

Potential Benefits:

  • More Targeted Ads: SGE’s deeper understanding of user intent could lead to better ad targeting. Ads could appear alongside more relevant search queries, potentially increasing click-through rates (CTR).
  • Enhanced User Experience: If SGE effectively answers user questions, users might be more receptive to well-placed ads that offer further solutions or specific products related to their search.
  • Rise of Interactive Ads: SGE might pave the way for more interactive ad formats. Imagine AI-powered chatbots within search results that answer user questions and subtly promote relevant products or services.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Reduced Clicks on Ads: If SGE directly answers user queries, there might be less need to click on traditional text ads. This could lead to a decrease in overall ad clicks.
  • Higher Competition for Ad Space: With potentially fewer clicks to go around, competition for ad space within SGE results could intensify. This might drive up costs for small businesses running AI ads.
  • Uncertain Targeting Efficiency: New AI ad formats within SGE might require adjustments to targeting strategies. It remains to be seen how effective current targeting methods will be in this evolving search landscape.

Overall, the impact of SGE on AI ads is uncertain. While there might be opportunities for more targeted and interactive ads, the potential decrease in clicks and increased competition could be a concern for small businesses.

So, what should you do now?

Focus on high-quality, informative content: Write content that directly addresses user questions and provides value. Think question-and-answer blog posts, in-depth guides, and informative product descriptions.Optimize for Knowledge Panels: SGE results often include “Knowledge Panels” summarizing key information. Ensure your Google My Business listing is up-to-date and consider creating FAQ pages to be featured in these panels.

Target long-tail keywords: With SGE potentially providing short answers, long-tail keywords (more specific searches) become even more important. Understand the specific questions your ideal customers are asking and tailor your content accordingly.

Prioritize mobile-friendliness: Mobile responsiveness is already crucial, but SGE results seem to favor mobile-optimized content. Ensure your website offers a seamless user experience on all devices.Embrace Structured Data: Structured data helps search engines understand your website’s content better. Implementing schema markup can increase your website’s chances of being featured in rich snippets within SGE results.

Don’t forget about traditional SEO: While SGE is on the horizon, strong SEO fundamentals remain essential. Maintain a healthy backlink profile, optimize page titles and meta descriptions, and regularly update your content.
